Goldring E4 MM Cartridge
World-famous analogue audio specialist Goldring introduces its new flagship E Series moving magnet cartridge: E4. Designed as the ultimate upgrade for any modern budget or midrange turntable, E4 represents the pinnacle of E Series engineering and performance.
E4 is designed to be compatible with all medium-to-high-mass tonearms of the type found on the majority of budget to midrange turntables. And because it’s constructed using the same high-quality core as the other E Series cartridges in the range, E4 is ideal both for those who wish to upgrade an obsolete cartridge in its entirety or those who want to boost the performance of their existing E Series cartridge by replacing the stylus.
New super elliptical bare diamond needle
The E4 features a bare super-elliptical stylus measuring just 7.6 x 18 microns (0.3 x 0.7 mils) cut and polished from a single homogeneous piece of diamond. This results in a lower effective mass and improved rigidity, which means that high-frequency details can be sampled much better than with an elliptical stylus. The E4 is far less prone to error or ringing with high-frequency groove modulations, and due to its finely polished 7.6 micron profile, it reads even very narrow grooves better. Lower distortion, improved transient response and a smooth frequency response ensure superior audio fidelity compared to any comparable priced alternative.
Hollow aluminum cantilever
Complementing the low-mass stylus, the E4 features a hollow aluminum cantilever. The light weight and superior stiffness of the material allows the stylus to sample mid to high frequencies with greater accuracy, while reducing distortion and misalignment.
Magnetic Duplex Technology™
The stereo information on vinyl records is contained in a single V-shaped groove, the sides of which are at an angle of 45 degrees to each other. Conventional pickups that use a single large magnet interacting with two vertically mounted coils (one for the left and one for the right channel) to extract a stereo signal from the groove often exhibit high levels of crosstalk - and consequently only a modest separation of the left and right channels. The E4 uses Goldring's Magnetic Duplex Technology™, in which two low-mass magnets are positioned at the same angles as the coils, so each magnet only interacts with its partner coil. This allows the E4 to more accurately reproduce the information from the groove, resulting in better stereo separation and a more accurate sound image.
Extensive adjustment options
The azimuth describes the angle that the vertical center line of the stylus makes with the surface of the record - it must be exactly perpendicular to the groove. Owners of cheaper turntables usually have no way to adjust the azimuth. Therefore, it is important that the cartridge is accurately aligned before inserting it into the turntable tonearm - a poorly adjusted azimuth can result in increased crosstalk and uneven channel balance. The E4 is engineered to allow micro-adjustments to be made during the production process, so each cartridge leaving the Goldring factory does not require further azimuth adjustment.
