Speaker’s Corner reissue of the 1964 Unforgettable finds Aretha at 22 years old, about midway through a run of albums for Columbia that yielded little in the way of commercial success and still three years away from her Atlantic debut, I Never Loved A Man, one of the great soul albums of all time. While Unforgettable is not up to that standard, it’s one of the clearest recordings of the young Aretha.
The Tribute album, which was written just a few months after Washington's death, contains the most important hit songs, sung by the 23-year-old successor, who feels noticeably comfortable in the big footsteps. In "Unforgettable", a Laid-back-number prepared with string sound, the singer captivates with vocal color changes and gospel-like ballad-feeling. The second track "Cold, Cold, Heart" shimmers with subliminal blues coloring, punctuated by sharp harp phrases and sucking Hammond organ sounds. Old-fashioned blues style with strong support of the big band characterizes the "Evil Gal Blues", but even with obligatory trombone unconventional Arranged ("Do not Say Your're Sorry Again") can be found in the exciting and varied title selection.
