Trichord Dino MkIII Phono Stage

The Dino Mk3 is a high performance phono amplifier which at an affordable price gives you tremendous value.

There are three options available to power the Dino Mk3 – the Toroidal AC supply, the ‘Dino+’ dc supply and the ‘Never Connected Dino+’ DC supply.

Designed for transparency and realism, this superb sounding amplifier is based on the fore-running Dino Mk1 and Dino Mk2 phono stages which have won many awards and accolades along the way.

Whether you have an ultra-low output Moving Coil cartridge or a high output Moving Magnet the Dino Mk2 will cope easily. A set of user friendly switches on the base of the unit allows you to simply adjust load and gain settings.

These settings are vital to match the amplifier to the cartridge and obtain the best sonic result. If your current phono stage only has a couple of options for this function, eg a MM/MC switch, then you are missing out on the ability to tune your system to it’s optimum.

An entire upgrade path exists for this product which allows you to improve performance each step of the way.

Two main items are required for operation – the Dino Mk3 phono stage itself and an accompanying power supply.

Start with the basic ac Toroidal Power Supply and work your way up in performance by upgrading to the ‘Dino+’ dc power supply, and ultimately to the ‘Never Connected’ dc power supply. An upgrade from the ‘Dino+’ to the ‘Never Connected’ is also possible by returning your unit to us to upgrade the electronics.

To further enhance the sonic performance of these dc power units an upgrade ‘High Performance Power Lead’ is available to replace the supplied dc power lead.

  • Fully compatible with all previous power supplies
  • Noise levels reduced by 4.5dB
  • High quality PTFE gold plated phono connectors on rear panel
  • Re-designed circuit board with improved ground layout
  • New analogue output stage using OPA827 op amps greatly improve sound quality
  • Compatible with MM and MC cartridges
  • Gain and cartridge loading adjustable by easily accessible DIP switches

Increase performance of your Dino as you step up through the various options

There are three options available to power the Dino Mk3 – the Toroidal AC supply, the ‘Dino+’ dc supply and the ‘Never Connected Dino+’ DC supply.

As you go up the range you benefit by an increase in audio performance.

All three power supplies are in separate boxes to keep noise and hum levels as far away as possible from the sensitive audio circuits.

Toroidal AC Power Supply

This is the basic power supply and is provided as a low cost introduction.

Performance level will be more than adequate for many users, but you can upgrade at any time to the ‘Dino+’ power supply, or for ultimate sonic performance  - the ‘Never Connected Dino+’ PSU.

The ABS molded housing of the Toroidal power supply contains an in-line low noise 40VA transformer. AC current is fed to the Dino where it is rectified to DC and regulated with two high performance, wide bandwidth Super Regulators.

‘Dino+’  DC Power Supply

The ‘Dino +’ Power Supply unit is made up of two completely independent and electrically isolated dc supply circuits, one for the positive voltage rail and one for the negative.

The specially made low noise audio 80VA toroidal transformer is followed by two independent bridge rectifiers. These are built with discrete ultra fast soft recovery diodes for low RF generation. The bridges are then followed by RC/RC filtering using four high performance, low ESR 1800uF Panasonic capacitors. Two voltage regulators provide solid and stable supply voltages.

This level of filtering and regulation provides you with a substantial increase in performance over the Toroidal supply.

Solid imaging and depth to the music are the main benefits.

Power is delivered from the ‘Dino+’  to the phono stage via a 4 way PTFE insulated, silver plated copper lead. This lead is upgrade-able to our ‘High Performance Interconnect Lead’.

‘Never Connected Dino+’ DC Power Supply

The NCPSU has completely different electronics to the standard ‘Dino+’ power supply.. Instead of an oversized toroidal transformer, there is a PCB mounting variety followed by our revolutionary noise reduction circuitry that is called ‘Never Connected’.

Although the regulation circuit is physically connected to the incoming mains, it is disconnected electrically. A monitoring circuit detects the portion of the sine wave that is charging the first of a pair of electrolytic capacitors. Once this first capacitor is fully charged, the diode bridge rectifier turns off and a MOSFET switching circuit transfers the charge from the first cap to the second. This cycle is repeated continuously.

At no point in time is the regulation circuitry electrically connected to the incoming rectified mains – hence the term ‘Never Connected’. The overall result is a large and measurable reduction in mains borne noise.

This dramatic reduction of mains borne noise enables the Dino phono circuit to give of its very best. As with the ‘Dino+’ PSU power is delivered to the phono stage via a 4 way PTFE insulated, silver plated copper lead. This lead is upgrade-able to our ‘High Performance Interconnect Lead’.

Great upgrade
Friday, 28 February 2020  |

I had a twenty-year old Dino Mk1 and after a few false starts and researching more I decided to take the plunge and upgrade to the Mk3 with the Dino+ PSU and high performance connecting cable, as well as a new cartridge.

I'm really pleased I spent the money and there is a very noticeable improvement (I guess some credit has to go to the new Ortofon Quintet Bronze I got at the same time!).

I could hear a lot more detail that I'd never heard before in records that I've had for years, but probably the biggest difference I noticed in my system (Michell Gryo SE, Cyrus 8XPD and B&W CM8s) was the bass which sounds very precise in its own right rather than previously being a little muddled.

The weakest link is now the original Rega arm on the Gyro but that upgrade will need to wait

Worth every penny
Thursday, 5 May 2016  |

Having upgraded my turntable last year to a Project Xtension10 and Ortofon Quintet Bronze, I discovered my MC phono stage in my pre-amp had died. As a stopgap I bought a mid price phono amp to get me going. I recently upgraded this to the Trichord Dino 3 and what a difference. It's like a new system, the cartridge matching is spot on and so easy to set, and once done on first listening my vinyl was literally giving me goosebumps. Bass weight was deep and controlled and the soundstage was open and somehow this phono stage was dragging detail out of my records I had never heard before. This has to be the best £500 I've spent and has made my system sing. I can only hope now that once the Dino has run in after some time that the sound improves even more. Highly recommended.
