Rega Fono MC Mk4 Phono Stage

The Fono MC MK4 is an exceptionally high quality MC phono stage designed to maximise the potential of any low output MC cartridge. Although specifically designed to compliment the latest Rega range of moving coils you will find full adjustability for gain and loading via dip switches conveniently placed on the rear panel making the Fono MC MK4 compatible with a wide range of third party low output MC cartridges. Now housed in a brand new redesigned case to match the new Fono MM MK5 and Neo MK2 and Rega’s latest range of electronic components offering a modern look guaranteed to integrate in to any hi-fi system.

The Fono MC MK4 has been designed to be effective, easy to use, and above all, to reproduce music. The Fono MC MK4 uses the Linear Systems low noise LSK389 FET in an all discrete input stage where low noise and linearity are vitally important to get the best from an MC cartridge. Because of the high input impedance of FET, the loading effects of the amplifier circuit are minuscule and do not affect the performance of the cartridge.

KEY FEATURES
Dedicated moving coil phono stage
Simple connectivity and operation
Fully adjustable via DIP switches via rear panel
MUSE operational amplifier used in RIAA equalization amplifer
Two selectable gain settings
Default factory settings matched for all Rega MC models
Latest design custom casework
Lifetime warranty against manufacture defects

A MUSE operational amplifier is used in the RIAA equalization amplifier. Polypropylene capacitors have been used in the signal path and in the RIAA equalization circuits. There is selectable input loading for both resistance and capacitance along with two different gain settings located on the back panel making the Fono MC MK4 compatible with most low output MC cartridges. The new Fono MC MK4 circuit resulted from the development work carried out on the hugely successful Aria phono amplifier.

The aesthetic design of the Fono MC MK4 was as important as the quality of its electrical capabilities, so it benefits from the same new aluminium case as the Rega Neo MK2 PSU and Fono MM MK5 phono stage, giving it a design which offers a familiar feel and moreover brings it in line with its illustrious bigger brothers.

Perfect partner for Anai Cartridge
25 February 2024  |

Deciding upon what phono stage to best partner with my Rega Planar 6 with Anai Cartridge was a bit daunting but after a bit of research it was always going to be pretty hard to ignore this Fono MC Box made by Rega themselves and designed specifically to compliment their very own range of MC cartridges. So after a few conversations and excellent advice once again from Analogue Seduction this really has proved to be the perfect match for my requirements and with the factory settings for the Anai pre-selected out of the box it was a breeze to get it up and running. It has my Planner 6 sounding stunning.!! I also love the fact the material for the casing and trim is identical in design to their Neo PSU so looks great sitting the shelf too. . Thanks once again to Analogue Seduction for their advice in helping me decide. Highly recommend this product if you have a Planar 6 with Anai Cartridge 10/10

Stunning Rega Arm Cartridge & Pre Amp
04 February 2024  |

After much deliberation, listening and discussion with our friends and Analogue Seduction, I purchased the Rega Ania Pro, moving coil cartridge along with the Rega RB880 tone arm with the matching Rega Fono MC Mk 4 phono stage preamp. For the Roksan Xerxes 20 turntable to accommodate the Rega components, a Xerxes / Rega arm-board completed the package.
I initially approached this alteration with some apprehension, as my previous experience of fitting an arm to this deck was an old and trusted SME3009 with Shure V15 cartridge (an excellent and detailed combination when it is finally set up - getting there was a trauma).
Anyway, lo and behold the Rega components fitted, arm & cartridge was quickly aligned, and the deck adjusted to suit the new combination. Stylus pressure & bias was soon sorted and checked with the ubiquitous HIFi Sound Test Record. Unlike the SME / V15 combination the Rega combo would not cover band C of the lateral modulation without a little mis-tracking. All other section of the HiFi obstacle course was tackled with ease. However, this does not detract from the musical performance. Whilst the SME Shure V15 is detailed, clear and clinical the Rega is a little coloured but powerful and inviting ! It feels more comfortable with Rock, Blues and big Orchestra, rather than delicate strings or vocals, where V15 excels. This is still new set up and the cartridge still is being run. It reveals little nuances with every vinyl I play. The Rega set up presents a different experience to the SME / Shure one that I wholly welcome and enjoy. The Arcam SA20 and Totem Sttafs, floor standing speakers, rise to occasion and appear to enjoy the music..
Knowledgeable friends have suggested I pair this Rega combo on a P8 or 10 turntable. That may be another venture and experience, just in case, I am having the 3009 refurbished by SME !
PS - I have copied this review for each of the component, it only needs to to read once. Thank you Simon and all at Analogue Seduction

Fono MC
20 October 2023  |

The Fono mk4 replaced a 2 box phono amp, the latest version of which is 4 times the price of the Rega. Using a DV20x2 cartridge, the performance of this amp is remarkable, including the clarity of the vocals and amazing drum transients such as cymbals. It's so good I'm going through my entire LP collection, hearing new things on all of them.
