The Phono Box RS represents Pro-Ject Audio's first foray into the world of high-end electronics. As masters of the analogue domain, it seems only fitting that their first model in this new Reference Series range is a phono stage of true distinction.
The Phono Box RS is an ultra-low noise and distortion preamplifier made with the audio connoisseur in mind. With this in mind, it offers not only a breathtaking performance, but is also capable of being fine-tweaked to suit a wide variety of premium pick-up cartridges. In fact, the Phono Box RS has a unique variable impedance control on the front panel which means impedance adjustments can now be done during music playback!Due to the use of some of the finest quality components available, like the SSM2019 pre-amplifier from Analog Devices on the input stages and Linear Technology's LT1010 as a high current buffer stage, the Phono Box RS delivers ultra-low levels of distortion and noise. Its very low output impedance makes it insensitive to the selection of interconnect cable types and lengths. Fully-passive RIAA and DECCA equalisation is selectable via the stylish switches on the front panel, as is the output Gain (on XLR and RCA) and a handy Mute function (the F/V switch relates to switching on and off the variable impedance control). Further cartridge adjustment is done via the familiar dip-switch layout on the back panel. The Phono Box RS offers fully balanced, dual-mono circuitry and both XLR and RCA inputs and outputs, earning it recognition in a wide variety of high-end systems. All in all, vinyl playback will never have sounded as clear, detailed and smooth, than with this superlative phono stage!
This is me two months into complete upgrade to the Pro-Ject "RS Line". I Purchased the mono amp boxes, pre-box, phono box, headbox and stream box.Straight away the sound stage that was present by these little project boxes was very very impressive. With the valve stages there is a warm sound presented with lots of depth and detail which suits my listening preference to a "T". The build quality is excellent and the size was a big plus point from an aesthetics and space perspective. There was "out of the box issue" with the Headbox but a quick email to the guys at Analogue Seduction and it was sorted straight away with an excellent no hassle/quibble replacement service. Great Service from the Analogue Seduction TeamI would have no reluctance in recommending the Pro-ject boxes to anyone. And anyone who has heard them is always left impressed. As I said, I am now 2 months in and they continue to surprise and delight.

Over the years, I have had the opportunity to use many excellent phono stages but this has to be one of the best sounding. Beautifully crisp but without grain, it will make your albums come alive. Really easy to adjust on the fly with the rotary impedance knob, you really can get the most out of your disks. I hope Pro-jest make a separate PSU at some point as this will make an already brilliant phono stage a real Giant killer. Buy with confidence!
