Michel Legrand - Legrand Jazz CD IMP8315

The classic meeting of the great French arranger/pianist with American jazz players like Miles Davis, Ben Webster, Milt Hinton, Donald Byrd, Hank Jones, and others. The tracks are a beautiful strident blend of Legrand's best arranging styles, and they show his keen talent for letting the soloist step forth into the spotlight, while complicated orchestrations swirl all around him. The titles are mostly jazz standards, but they're done in a great way, with lots of punch, and lots of great work by all the players. Titles include "Round Midnight", "Night In Tunisia", "Nuages", "In A Mist", and "Django".

The sheer presence and breathtaking clarity of this recording are enough in themselves to set even the most casual of Jazz fan's spine a tingling .That Legrand was able to muster such an incredible roster of Jazz legends for this album speaks volumes for his silky skills as an orchestrator/producer. Lucky are those who can afford what is sure to become a holy grail vinyl.It is worth every single penny. To reduce it to purely monetry terms is rather crass, I admit,
but it's stock value will doubtless only grow for those of us with their pockets in mind during these bitter financial times.I can't imagine why anyone after hearing it would wish to part with it at any price. Legrand swiched the gas on and I'm going to bathe in the sumptuous warmth as often as I can.I'll just have to hope those grubbing ice-hearted energy companies own prices don't freeze my hand cold and dead in order to prize this jewel from me.
