Noticeable improvement

I thought I'd try it to see if it improves on my Rega RP3 ceramic bearing, and though it's not night and day, I reckon it's slightly quieter, but time will tell.

A bit more guidance on how much oil to use would help, too.

Good and simple upgrade
Sunday, 11 October 2020  |

This was a great upgrade to my old P3 circa 1980. Being due for an oil change I decided to go for the ruby bearing and oil upgrade.
This is is up there with the best upgrades I have done to my P3. It runs smoother and quieter and as other reviewers have wrote the music seems tighter.
Also whilst laying Pink Floyd's the Wall I noticed things that I have never heard before! something I never expected.

This is good value upgrade IMO.

Have a Ball
Wednesday, 8 July 2020  |

An upgraded sub-platter and platter on my RP1 and a JN P200 replacement stylus on a Nagaoka 110 brought significant improvements. One of the more straightforward tweaks left was an upgrade to the ball bearing so I thought I’d give it a go. I’m always amazed at what information a groove in a bit of plastic can hold and the effect of dropping in the ruby bearing was to extract more of that information. Bass, treble, staging, detail and focus noticeably improved and consequently my enjoyment of the music increased.

Some things I noticed,

- details emerged from the mix of familiar albums. The “comments” throughout Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon ("There is no dark side of the moon really. Matter of fact it's all dark.” etc) became clearly audible and not something mumbled in the background;
ride, crash and hi-hat cymbals sweetened and became musical, integrated parts of the kit. Two good examples, the panned hits during the freak out section of Led Zeppelin’s Whole Lotta Love and at the end of Car on the Hill by Joni Mitchell;
vocals and backing vocals blossomed (e.g. Car on the Hill again, Ry Cooder’s album Borderline); and,
the horns on jazz recordings became fuller and punchier with edge and attack.

I consider it £24 well spent. The improvements the bearing brought made the music more involving and enjoyable. And involvement and joy are what we want. Don’t we?

Quality Bearing
Sunday, 24 March 2019  |

I have been using my original Planar 2 since 1980. Somehow, almost 40 years have slipped by. Original bearing, original belt. I vaguely remember changing the oil in 1986.
Definitely time for some work. Only complaint was that some of the bearing oil leaked in transit, making everything smell like the refineries in Carteret New Jersey. Turntable runs smoothly and quietly with three drops of oil and the new bearing
