Icon Audio PS1 Valve Phono Stage Amplifier MKII

Available in MM or MM and MC.

The Icon PS1 MM and MC valve phono stage was introduced in 2005 and has proved to be one of Icon's best sellers. It is well know that for many reasons, valves can sound much better than transistors, this is especially so with vinyl reproduction. Chiefly this is because:

  • The massive overload of valves prevents distortion on highly modulated or scratched & worn LPs therefore minimising noise.
  • The warm sound of valves is particularly suited to the reproduction of music from vinyl.
  • The huge 40db RIAA difference between 20hz and 20khz is easier for valves than transistors.
  • Icon's passive design uses no feedback
  • Icon's simple design uses audiophile components.
  • Icon use hard wired point to point wiring with no printed circuit board.

But beware! There are several so-called valve phono stages that are only part valve or only use valves as an output stage and are marketed as as valve phono stage. It is essential that the tiny precious few milivolts of signal from a turntable go straight in to the valve without any resistor or coupling capacitor in the way (as is the case in some other designs) which can add sonic impuritie

 

This new MkII version of the PS1 includes a tweaked power supply and around ten small improvements to the circuit and wiring, all of which have resulted in even better sonic performance.
