AudioQuest VDM-5 75Ω Digital Cable

AudioQuest/CinemaQuest VDM Series cables are designed to minimize distortion across an extremely wide bandwidth. A 75 Ohm cable is like a conduit which has to carry relatively low frequency analogue video (Composite, up to 4.2MHz), or super sensitive digital audio (SP/DIF, up to 24.576 MHz), or uncompressed High Definition video (HDTV, up to 750 MHz), or cable TV/broadband (CATV, up to 1 GHz).

SOLID CONDUCTORS:

VDM-5’s centre conductor is solid. Electrical and magnetic interaction between strands in a conventional cable is the greatest source of distortion, often causing a somewhat dirty, harsh sound. Solid conductors are fundamental toward achieving VDM-5's very clean sound.

PERFECT-SURFACE SILVER (PSS):

VDM-5’s Perfect Surface Silver (PSS) has an astonishingly smooth and pure surface. Proprietary metal processing technology protects the wire’s surface at every stage of drawing and fabrication. When high-purity low-oxide copper is kept as soft, pure and smooth as possible, it becomes the wonderfully low distortion PSC conductor used in many AudioQuest models. Beginning the same process with ultra pure copper makes possible PSC+ copper’s even more focused and free-flowing sound. PSS’s extreme transparency is made possible by applying Perfect Surface Technology to ultra pure solid silver. For fifteen years AudioQuest has pioneered the use of superior metals; yet even we were surprised by the huge leap in performance made possible with Perfect Surface Technology. PSC and PSC+ simply outperform all previously available metals at any price. PSS is the ultimate example of how far this remarkable technology can take us.

INSULATION:

Nitrogen-Injected Hard Cell Foam foam reduces distortion caused by the insulating material. The combination conductive PVC and silver-plated braid shield provides 100% protection coverage and lower distortion.

TERMINATIONS:

VDM-5’s plugs are Resistance Welded to the cable in a process which sends 8,000 amperes of current through the junction of conductor and plug for 33 millionths of a second. The heat resulting from the resistance of the metals locally liquefies the conductor and the plug, creating a single material alloy where the two meet. An ideal connection that puts any solder to shame. VDM-5’s thickly silver-plated RCA plugs use a patented design that eliminates the distortion caused by the extra contact inside most plugs. Because the ground shells are stamped instead of machined, the metal can be chosen for low distortion instead of for its machinability. VDM-5's RCA and BNC connectors have silver thickly plated directly over the plug parts, without the intermediary nickel layer common to almost all other plugs. Silver plating provides the best possible connection, regardless of plating on the equipment jacks.
