Musical Fidelity MX-VYNL Phono Stage

After trying a few other phono stages (from other dealers) I came to Analogue Seduction and with expert guidance from Cliff decided to try the MX-Vinyl, what a difference! Amazing clarity, deep black silences and the overall musicality that had been missing, even from a more expensive competitor. I hesitate to say Wow factor as that suggests it’s adding something, but it really “just” displays what is already present in a more revealing way. I was initially concerned about paying this much without auditioning but shouldn’t have worried, there’s no way they’re getting this beaut back.

Received an ex-dem example, in excellent technical and cosmetic order, with the usual superb service! It was immediately obvious that this phono stage offers a clear and subtle, yet punchy, sound with my Ortofon Quintet Black S. All the adjustments are on the front panel, of course, and they incorporate sensible muting when changing a setting, avoiding thumps and bumps. In all, everything I wanted from a phono stage in my current system.

For about 10 days i play some audiophile lps and i impressed from sound quality. It is real high end. device, especialy human voices are like real. Also the rotary switch is very usefull as we can change the load capacity or load resistance when it plays music. The construction quality is very high.

I highly recommend it.

I read with interest the reviews regarding this excellent phone stage and agree it performs superbly regardless of cost. I have used one for about a year or so now however, I have got shot of the wall wart power supply as it was strangling the performance of this great phono stage.I am now using a Mascot Type 2083 12vdc 1.2amp regulated linear power supply available from RS Components, stock number RS400-7005. This makes a huge improvement, more detail and punch, tighter lower bass and a sweeter mid range and all for less than £40. The MX-VYNL 12v plug will have to be swapped over from the wall wart but this is not difficult. I keep the Mascot power supply well away from the MX-VYNL as it has a stonking powerful transformer that can induce hum if to close, 3-4 feet away is a good start, it also gets quite warm which is normal. I am not suggesting you use this power supply but it works great for me. Also to allow balanced operation, Canare supply a balanced tonearm cable with the correct Neutrik Rean 5 pin mini XLR plug to fit the MX-VYNL for around £65.

There are so many positive reviews about MX-VYNL. I compared it directly to Avid Pellar and Rega Aria and MX-VYNL is definitely a better sounding amp. Where Pellar is hard in the upper midrange MX-VYNL is beautifully open and natural sounding without loosing attack and dynamics. A winner.

Upgrading from the respectable, budget Rega Fono Mini A2D stage and the thing i notice the most is the silence around instruments and background. Not to say that the mini Rega was noisy, but it is just that the Mx-Vynl is particularly quiet and this reveals instrumental details and musical nuances previously unheard. The extra detail simply makes it a real pleasure to listen to - some reviews say it sounds warm but i personally think it is more neutral - it seems to disappear so that you feel that you are listening directly to the record. It positions instruments true to the recorded soundstage, so the atmosphere of a Jazz Club or Stadium is faithfully brought to life true to the recording - this is wonderfully rewarding to listen to and delivered in an impressively uncluttered, honest way.
The other reason i bought this is the flexibility in setup options: i have a digital input only Preamp and so the MX-VYNL is connected to the preamp via an Analogue-to-Digital converter (the highly recommended Tascam UH-7000). When initially using conventional RCA interconnects between the MX-VYNL and Tascam, the sound was good, but it improved further when connected with Balanced interconnects (Van Damme Starquad), even though the input to the MX-VYNL from the turntable is conventional unbalanced RCA. The sound just seemed to tidy up even more when using the Balanced outputs on the MX-VYNL - more silent background and cleaner rendition of instruments such as piano and percussion.
In addition, i am running a vintage Shure V15 MM cartridge on an SME arm, and the range of impedance options on the MX-VYNL enabled me to select the high 400pF spec for the Shure without modification, so that makes me very happy.
I also ordered the 12V iFi power supply at the same time, recommended by another reviewer, which i plugged in without comparing to the stock power supply, so cannot comment if this helps in anyway, but it seems like a good option based on the reviews and it works perfectly.
So in summary, i'm really happy - I cannot stop working through my record collection, constantly loving the way it is being revealed and re-presented - it's musical and honest and really quite addictive! This MX-VYNL is proving to be a really well engineered and excellent value piece of kit - highly recommended.
