sublime sounding amplifier with the right headphone
Thursday, 10 March 2016  |

I own all of the major headphones, including Stax 009, Audeze LCD4, HiFi Man HE 1000, Abyss 1266 and I heard good things about this amplifier from various contacts in the industry - I was delighted when Gary and his team started to work with Luxman, as I had local coverage in case of problems.

My initial findings with this amplifier have been very positive, with specific headphones. As I would expect from Luxman (as with Leben), it is an Asian company who build to the highest standards. The chassis work is beautiful and the reassuring heft to the body highlights the no compromise construction.

I tested the amplifier with my Abyss 1266 and found that while the sound quality was very good, that the Luxman was losing a little bit of the bass definition when compared to my Cavilli Liquid Gold. Not that it was a bad partner for this particular headphone, but the synergy was a little lacking.

When paired up with the Audeze LCD4 and HiFiMan HE1000 the results were spectacular. The HE1000 via a custom set of hand made 3 pin Furutech balanced cables sounded sublime - bass definition was punchy but not bloated, and instrument and vocal seperation in the mid range is right up there with custom headphone amplifiers I have heard at close to £8,000. The Audeze LCD4 with a ALO AUDIO 16 reference cable also delivered a remarkable listening experience. After initial testing I was finding myself getting sucked into the music rather than spending most of my time analysing imperfections. This is the sign of a true high grade component - one that is both technically excellent, but also involving. There is also plenty of power on tap to power the most demanding planar headphones, and the only issue with the Abyss 1266 is that the results with the Cavalli Liquid Gold have left me with such a high reference point that nothing has yet to compete. Then again this amplifier was specifically designed with those headphones in mind.

If you own Audeze LCD4's or HiFi Man HE1000's then the Luxman P700u is a remarkably good buy. It is expensive at £3,000 but the musical interaction between the amplifier and those particular headphones is magical. If you are lucky enough to own some complex classical music downloaded in 24 bit from HDTracks and use a good DAC such as the AK380 then this combination will be immensely satisfying.
