Minimises the turbulence. It has dimples on the surface that generated tiny current over which air can flow smoothly which reduces the turbulence and improves sound performance. Turbulence creates noise from air moving in and out of the port as a result extraneous noise is heard as you turn the volume up which means the bass wont be as light and well timed as it should be.
