Enrico Pieranunzi - Fellinijazz 2x Limited Edition Double Vinyl LP (CAMJ 7867-1)

Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of our signature production: the musical tribute, by a star-studded lineup, to the legendary film director is now available in this limited edition double LP exclusively available from CAM JAZZ.  The recordings have been remastered and four bonus, previously unreleased tracks have been added. The package includes the album also on CD format of the original 2003 CD issue. Only 999 numbered copies available.

In order to better entice both those who have loved this record and those who have just come across it, four bonus tracks, recorded in October 2012, are included: three pieces by Pieranunzi inspired by Fellini and Nino Rota’s music, plus “La dolce vita” re-recorded.  Ten years ago, “Fellini Jazz” came out as a real event: it had been a long time since three international jazz stars such as Kenny Wheeler, Charlie Haden, and Paul Motian, had teamed up on a record. Enrico Pieranunzi had succeeded in getting them all to deal with the dreamlike world of Fellini and Rota, the group being joined by the then young, promising, budding Chris Potter. Playing but not overly playful, the Roman pianist wrote some amusing liner notes revealing how amazed he was at having been supported by such valuable, impressive sidemen: “Motian, Haden, Wheeler, Potter… how is it possible? Such a group can only exist in the imagination of a daring record-maker or in dreams”. Ira Gitler’s remarks should also be quoted: “Pieranunzi brings forth a similarity between the way in which jazz players play and directors like Fellini shape their films: «They both aim at looking beyond, all the time, in search of what lies beneath the surface of things. It’s an endless, strenuous effort to express the mysterious and hidden areas of ourselves, where the roots of the subconscious of the human condition lie».”  Thus, a “dream team” of jazz, gathered in a recording studio and jamming on famous themes by Nino Rota (with the sole exception of Luis Bacalov’s “La città delle donne”), with master Fellini’s silhouette clear in their minds. “These players were the best actors for such a challenging musical film”, Pieranunzi explains, building an image that crisply expresses what the record is about. A significant record, and even more valuable on vinyl.
